Questions about how to make an appointment, the approximate cost, and insurance coverage also inevitably ensue as newcomers try to understand the Japanese clinical experience.<\/p>\n

How Japanese dental differ from American\/Westerners<\/h2>\n

While not exactly teeming with English Speaking Dentists, Japan has an excellent tradition of Dentists all over Tokyo. It\u2019s a common joke that there are more dentists than convenience stores, so there\u2019s no chance of not having access to care: it\u2019s just that picking your dentist is extra important.<\/p>\n

Dentistry in Japan is almost often charged by the visit and not the procedure. Be sure your dentist has a good reputation, and speak candidly about any major procedure, so you know exactly what\u2019s coming up.<\/p>\n

How to go to the dentist in Japan with your health insurance<\/h2>\n

Japanese National Health Insurance covers almost all dentists in Japan.<\/p>\n

A private health insurance company (like international healthcare providers) may be pickier about who\u2019s permitted, so for those not on the NHI, we highly recommend you check with their provider before scheduling.<\/p>\n

Most dentist bills come out to around 1,500 yen for routine checkups\/cleaning (more exacting fee schedules can be seen here). Some clinics charge an extra 1000-2000 yen on your first visit as a new patient fee.<\/p>\n

NOTE: If you are living in Japan for longer than three months, you must have Japanese National Insurance<\/strong>. This can be obtained through your employer or paid directly by you to the city office.<\/p>\n

Almost all dentist appointments can usually be made over the phone or online. Some dentists don\u2019t take walk-ups, so be sure to call ahead and find an available time.<\/p>\n

Office hour open until late night<\/h2>\n

Unlike regular hospitals, it\u2019s quite challenging to find any dental clinics open until late night; the latest you\u2019ll find are usually 19:00 or 19:30. In our list HAPLUS<\/span><\/a> open till 21:00.<\/p>\n

While some private pay clinics (like United Dental) offer off-the-clock dental emergency care, it\u2019ll cost you. Insurance won\u2019t cover these procedures sometimes when they\u2019re done off the clock, and most prefer to wait rather than get to an emergency dental clinic.<\/p>\n
