At MetroResidences, we take our commitment to our clients’ decision to live in Japan seriously. We are always available as resources to our customers, and one of the questions we receive most often is how to find a good dentist.

Questions about how to make an appointment, the approximate cost, and insurance coverage also inevitably ensue as newcomers try to understand the Japanese clinical experience.

How Japanese dental differ from American/Westerners

While not exactly teeming with English Speaking Dentists, Japan has an excellent tradition of Dentists all over Tokyo. It’s a common joke that there are more dentists than convenience stores, so there’s no chance of not having access to care: it’s just that picking your dentist is extra important.

Dentistry in Japan is almost often charged by the visit and not the procedure. Be sure your dentist has a good reputation, and speak candidly about any major procedure, so you know exactly what’s coming up.

To protect you from this, the dentists on our list below have been independently verified by other sources and customer reviews.

How to go to the dentist in Japan with your health insurance

English Speaking Dentist in Tokyo

Japanese National Health Insurance covers almost all dentists in Japan.

A private health insurance company (like international healthcare providers) may be pickier about who’s permitted, so for those not on the NHI, we highly recommend you check with their provider before scheduling.

Most dentist bills come out to around 1,500 yen for routine checkups/cleaning (more exacting fee schedules can be seen here). Some clinics charge an extra 1000-2000 yen on your first visit as a new patient fee.

NOTE: If you are living in Japan for longer than three months, you must have Japanese National Insurance. This can be obtained through your employer or paid directly by you to the city office.

Almost all dentist appointments can usually be made over the phone or online. Some dentists don’t take walk-ups, so be sure to call ahead and find an available time.

Below is a master list of our top dental clinics in Tokyo. These dental offices cover cosmetic dentistry, oral surgery, and general dentistry, and dental care.

Office hour open until late night

Unlike regular hospitals, it’s quite challenging to find any dental clinics open until late night; the latest you’ll find are usually 19:00 or 19:30. In our list HAPLUS open till 21:00.

While some private pay clinics (like United Dental) offer off-the-clock dental emergency care, it’ll cost you. Insurance won’t cover these procedures sometimes when they’re done off the clock, and most prefer to wait rather than get to an emergency dental clinic.

English Speaking Doctor in Tokyo

Tokyo is full of small, round-the-clock Japanese dentists, however (which you can find with a quick google of ‘clinics near here’), and if you can get yourself there with a friend who speaks Japanese, you should be able to get treatment ASAP– or at least get enough information to get you an emergency appointment with your regular dentist.

Wherever you decide to trust with your smile, we at MetroResidences look forward to seeing it upon our next meeting. Good luck, and stay well.
