Best Accommodation for Tokyo 2020

tokyo

With the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic and Paralympic games coming up, we know our city is about to get– well, a little crazy, to say the least. Some estimates have said numbers of tourists could reach up to the tens of millions, in a city already full of people eating, drinking, and taking public transport. At a time like this, it’s important that you have a safe, quiet oasis to head home to at the end of the day.

At MetroResidences, we firmly believe that a good home base makes all the difference. Even more importantly, we know that in times like this, it’s location, location, location! With the number of people roaming the streets, it’s vital to be close to the action wherever you want to stay in Tokyo. The safety of you and your family or friends is paramount, and believe me– we’ve thought of this too. That’s why we curated this list, so you know you’re getting the best accommodations for Tokyo 2020.

Serviced apartments

Before we show you locations, it’s important to know the difference between a regular and serviced apartment. Serviced apartments are apartments that are move-in ready, for any length of time. These are not quite vacation rentals– they were originally meant for those coming in for work, so they often require at least a booking time of at least one month or longer. Serviced apartments are also unlike Airbnbs because they’re always the entire apartment.

Generally, they are serviced by housekeepers at least once a week, though that can vary depending on the property. Vacation rentals for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 will be few and far between, so increasing your search to serviced apartments may prove fruitful. Here are some locations with serviced apartments we love.

Near Olympic Stadium

The official Olympic Stadium is home to the iconic opening and closing ceremonies, as well as several other athletics events. These next three are very close to the Olympic stadium, so you can watch the Opening ceremony and mosey home without fear of being crushed into trains. Both the Olympics and Paralympics use this venue.

Shinjuku Station Area

This sweet studio is located right next to Shinjuku Gyoen, one of the first ever designated imperial parks in Tokyo. Shinjuku Gyoen train station is minutes away, and in less than 15 minutes you can be in the heart of one of the most active and interesting districts in Tokyo. Despite the location, Shinjuku Gyoen is set back just enough to be peaceful– it’s amazing how quiet the city can become. This studio is a bit small for families but perfect for a couple looking for small space with a fully furnished room, modern bathroom, and fully equipped kitchen.

Shibuya Station Area

This next property is perfect for young families, or couples looking for a little more luxurious digs. This designer Loft apartment is two stories, with an open-plan kitchen and living room on the first floor and a beautiful bedroom on the top. This particular property lies on the intersection of several train lines, making it an excellent choice for those who want lots of travel options when they aren’t cheering on their team! If you’d rather stay close to home, you’re still next to all the action and are fully immersed in the fashion paradises of Harajuku and Omotesando.

Roppongi Station Area

This luxury studio apartment is located in one of the most enviable neighborhoods in Tokyo; Roppongi. Nightlife is booming around here, with most of Tokyo’s dance clubs and bars located along the main road. This is also an area full of rich international history, and home to most of the embassies in Tokyo– so those worried about their Japanese ability, have no fear– you won’t be the lone foreigner in this neck of the woods. This apartment, while a studio, also has the luxury of a separated bath and toilet, so you can enjoy a long, uninterrupted soak. This is also close to the office areas of Akasaka and Azabu-Juban, so if you still have work to do, you can do it here in style.

These next properties are close to the Ariake and Tokyo Bay areas, which carry many events in the Olympic games. Gymnastics, Aquatics, Canoe, and Tennis are all held here, as well as several other events in both the Olympics and Paralympics. These areas, while a little outside central Tokyo, offer more tranquility and convenience– a godsend in the busyness that will surround the Tokyo Olympics.

Bay Area

You can’t get much closer to a venue than this apartment in Odaiba. With this apartment, you could easily walk to several of the venues, or take the monorail if you’re a little pressed for time. This apartment offers incredible views of the Bay, and at 38 sqm is more than spacious enough for two. This property also boasts a small fully-equipped kitchen nook with a three-burner-range and counter space, excellent for those looking to try their hand at Japanese cooking while they’re here. If you’re looking to soak in some excellent views (as well as a sea breeze) without the crowds of Odaiba and Ariake, you’ve come to the right place.

Near Kokugikan & Nippon Budokan

This area harks back to traditional Japan, and hosts events like Judo and Karate. The Budokan is located very close to old trade hubs like Akihabara and Ueno, and there’s always a deal to be had somewhere close by. This is a great area for those looking for a quieter, more cultural Japanese experience in neighborhoods slightly less affected by the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Akihabara & Ueno Area

Located in the heart of Japan’s “Sumo Town”, Ryogoku boasts beautiful architecture in an excellent location central to downtown Tokyo. While this is an area full of traditional restaurants and shops, your room is full of modern amenities; including a 40 inch TV, in-room washer, and built-in dryer for your bathroom. This room also boasts a beautiful view of Tokyo Skytree– excellent for a romantic getaway with a view!

Baseball Stadium & International Stadium Yokohama

Yokohama is not exactly in Tokyo but is just as much a part of the Olympic fervor as those within the city limits. Those looking to catch the team sports will find both baseball and football games a quick jaunt from their front door, and ideal for those looking to be a little ways away from the Tokyo heat.

Yokohama Area

This is an excellent location so close to the waterfront that you can smell the sea. Foodies will celebrate the proximity to Chinatown, a beloved spot for both cheap eats and fine dining. All appliances in this apartment are brand new and boast beautiful Yamashita park right below. Take a stroll through the park, have a quick soup dumpling, and head on over to the Olympic venue for a near perfect day regardless of a team win.

Because it is Olympic Season, we unfortunately, have to apply a peak season fee if you’re checking out anytime from July 15th to August 31st. This fee consists of an additional one-month’s rental fee on top of the initial one month, charged in full at the beginning of booking. This is not a deposit and will not be refunded. Even if you stay more than one month (with some properties available up to two years), you will only be charged the peak season fee once.
